Men's Health: Advice for All Ages

At every stage of life, male health needs require specific attention in terms of nutrition, physical activity, and prevention. In November's month of male cancer awareness, let's explore together some useful tips for preserving health across the lifespan.

At age 20

Adopting healthy habits from a young age is crucial because the behaviors established at this stage will influence long-term health.

While young people often lead very active lifestyles, it is essential to pay attention to two key aspects:

  • Nutrition. In main meals, it is advisable to include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein. Maintaining a healthy weight is easier at this age, but establishing proper eating habits early on is critical to preserving health over time.
  • Exercise. Running, jogging and any other sport practiced regularly and consistently is a beneficial option. The important thing is to develop a disciplined approach to exercise, as it will contribute to better overall health over the years.

Also, at this age it is crucial to pay attention to the health of one's skin to prevent cancer. Avoiding prolonged sun exposure and the use of sunlamps and applying sunscreen with an appropriate SPF (Sun Protection Factor) are essential practices.

At age 30

The thirties represent a period of significant change: increased focus on work, living alone, or building a new family. Increased commitments may contribute to the risk of sedentariness, making attention to physical activity and diet crucial.

  • Physical activity and diet. With an increasingly hectic lifestyle, it is critical to make conscious food choices at every meal and ensure an adequate level of physical activity. Men in this age group benefit from longer periods of exercise. Regular exercise helps to counteract sedentariness and maintain good physical fitness.
  • Regular visits to the doctor. Despite feeling healthy, it is advisable to schedule regular visits with your doctor for routine checkups and examinations. These checkups can reveal any hidden health problems, even if you have no obvious symptoms.

At age 40

As in your 30s, it is essential to pay attention to your health in your 40s. This is the age when the first prostate or heart problems may emerge. Seeing your doctor to determine the appropriate examinations can help detect any disorders or diseases before they become more serious.

  • Nutrition and hydration. Maintaining a balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables is essential. The guiding principle is "everything in moderation." In addition, it is especially crucial to drink plenty of water to keep the body hydrated.
  • Continuous physical activity. Exercise remains crucial. As you get older, it is important to adapt your workouts, listening to your body's signals and addressing any aches and pains and joint stiffness with a constant, mindful approach.

At age 50

Reaching the age of 50 is a crucial time for men's health, when a personalized prevention plan should be developed with your physician. This plan should include cancer screenings such as urological examination, PSA test, and colonoscopy, along with specialist examinations and visits.

Mindful eating:

  • Eliminate unnecessary sugars.
  • Drink alcohol in moderation, paying attention to choices about the type of alcohol, as calories can build up quickly.

Adapted exercise:

  • Do not allow aging-related rigidity to limit physical activity.
  • Integrate new joint-beneficial activities, such as swimming, cycling and brisk walking, to maintain flexibility and joint health.

At age 60

At this age, it is essential to consolidate a healthy diet. If not, consult a specialist to develop a balanced diet together, as overweight and obesity are risk factors for many diseases and can aggravate conditions already present.

Exercise continuously:

  • Do not stop exercising; on the contrary, it is essential for good health.
  • Evaluate activities such as Tai Chi, Yoga, Pilates, which focus on stretching and improve flexibility.
  • Be sure to stay hydrated before, during and after exercise to prevent injury.

Active health management:

  • Keep a journal with appointments, tests, medications taken and symptoms.
  • Do not neglect medical appointments and screenings, as prevention is crucial.

After the age of 70

Security at home:

  • Consider the safety of your home, especially if your vision is impaired.
  • Avoid "do-it-yourself" activities that require the use of ladders or potentially dangerous tools.

Physical activity:

  • According to the WHO (World Health Organization), people over 65 should engage in aerobic activities, muscle-strengthening workouts and exercises to improve balance.
  • Start gradually if you have never played sports and consult your doctor to adapt the activity to your health condition.

Consider adopting a pet:

  • If you live alone, consider adopting a pet for companionship and emotional well-being.

Centralize medical care:

  • Centralize medical care with your primary care physician, keeping him or her informed about symptoms and medications.
  • At this stage of life, active management of health and daily activities is essential to ensure an optimal quality of life.
