Oncological Dermatology

Oncological dermosurgery deals with the surgical treatment of cancer-related diseases, benign and malignant, of the skin and skin imperfections.

Surgical treatments depend on the complexity or type of the disease. Using the most up-to-date techniques, UPMC specialists proceed with the superficial removal of benign skin lesions ( including cysts, lipomas, papillomas, fibroids, warts, seborrheic and actinic keratoses).

In addition, in the case of skin cancer conditions, we perform surgical interventions, which are followed by reconstructive treatments and rehabilitation.

Oncological Dermatology Conditions We Treat

Among the skin cancers and skin cancers that are treated at UPMC are:

  • Epitheliomas.
  • Melanoma, originates from the cells that produce melanin, the pigment that protects against the harmful effects of the sun's rays.
  • Epithelial skin cancers (non-melanoma), originate from cells within the skin.
  • Non-melanoma-related skin cancers.

Epitheliomas are tumors affecting any part of the skin. Based on the type of skin cell involved in the tumour, epitheliomas are divided into:

  • Basal cell, or basaliomas.
  • Squamous cells, or spinalomas.

The basalioma has a local invasiveness and does not tend to metastasize, instead growing very slowly. Due to the high risk of recurrence, complete removal of the tumour is essential.

Squamous cell carcinoma is a more aggressive type of tumor, it grows more rapidly and, when it occurs in the head or neck, it tends to metastasize to the lymph node. Once again, it is important to diagnose and remove it as soon as possible.

Melanoma

This type of tumor can occur anywhere on the skin, but also on the mucous membranes, the meninges at the top of the spinal cord and the eye. Surgical treatment aims to completely remove the tumor and is most effective in the case of early diagnosis when the tumor is still small and does not invade the deeper layers of the skin.

The chances of a melanoma spreading depend on how deep it has reached in the skin before its removal. While it may be less common than other skin cancers, melanoma is considered, however, the most dangerous, especially if it is not detected early.
