Pathologies Treated

At UPMC, we treat different types of foot diagnoses and related disorders such as:

  • Hallux valgus. Deformation of the big toe that causes a displacement of the base (first metatarsal) outwards and of the tip (proximal phalanx) towards the other toes. Excessively wear of high heels and the narrow space for the front of the foot cause, in fact, an incorrect posture and consequently an overload on the structures of the foot.
  • Metatarsalgia. Very frequent painful disease that limits the support of the foot and can become disabling. It occurs for different causes in young people and adults and especially in the elderly in which other deformities are associated.
  • Hallux rigid. Cartilaginous degeneration of the big toe joint, which causes pain and limitation of joint movements.
  • Heel spur. Calcification, with a characteristic spur appearance, which occurs near the insertion of the heel fascia. It causes stiffness and pain with pangs under the heel.
  • Plantar fasciitis. Inflammation that often involves pain in the plantar fascia, the arched ligament between the heel and the sole of the foot. It usually affects athletes, obese people, or people who frequently use high-heeled shoes or completely flat soles.
  • Morton's neuroma. Increase in volume of an interdigital sensory nerve of the foot. It is caused by a chronic irritative stimulus of a mechanical nature, which produces an increase in fibrous tissue around the nerve. This enlargement causes pain similar to that of metatarsalgia.
  • Flat foot. Formation of the foot characterized by the flattening of the plantar vault (the central internal part that rests, completely or partially, on the ground) and by the valgus-pronation of the calcaneus. In most cases it does not cause pain.

Minimally Invasive Foot Surgery

At UPMC, we offer innovative minimally invasive percutaneous techniques that have revolutionized the approach to foot surgery.

In the past, surgical techniques were limited to the re-toning of the soft parts of the foot, without correcting the bony aspects of the deformities. This led to frequent relapses and a painful postoperative.

Today, minimally invasive surgery is the most suitable modality, also for prevention and is able to avoid the worsening of the most common diseases from the first signs.

The use of these surgical techniques has numerous advantages such as the absence of:

  • Scars.
  • Metal means.
  • Postoperative pain.
