Dr. Sergio Sciacca is a Cardiac Surgeon and has been serving at IRCCS ISMETT–UPMC since 2004. He has been Medical Coordinator of the Perfusion Service since June 2016.
He graduated cum laude in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Catania, receiving the prestigious Clementi Prize, and completed his Residency in Cardiac Surgery at the same institution. He continued his training in leading international centers, including the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at TAYS Hospital in Tampere (Finland) under Prof. Matti Tarkka, and the Department of Cardiac Surgery and Heart Transplantation at Niguarda Ca’ Granda Hospital in Milan, as well as advanced courses in aortic root surgery, mitral valve repair, and surgical techniques for atrial fibrillation in Nijmegen (The Netherlands).
Between 2011 and 2024, he performed as first operator:
- 158 heart transplants.
- 108 Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) implants.
- 2085 open-heart surgical procedures.
His main areas of expertise include mechanical circulatory support, heart transplantation and organ preservation, minimally invasive and endoscopic cardiac surgery, off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting, valve repair, and surgical ablation of atrial fibrillation.
He is an active member of several scientific societies, including:
- International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT).
- Italian Society of Cardiac Surgery (SICCH).
- Italian Society of Organ Transplantation (SITO).
- Italian Society for Skin Lesions (AIUC).
He is the author of numerous scientific publications and is regularly invited to speak at international conferences on advanced cardiac surgery and heart transplantation.
