Breast Cancer: What You Need to Know
Breast cancer (or breast carcinoma) develops in the tissue of the breast, which includes the lobules—glands that produce milk—and the ducts that carry milk from the lobules to the nipple.
It is the most common cancer among women: it is estimated that 1 in 8 women may develop it over the course of their lives.
In Italy, over 900,000 women are currently living with a breast cancer diagnosis, and more than 53,000 new cases are reported each year (Source: I numeri del cancro in Italia 2024, AIOM).
Incidence increases especially after the age of 50, but in recent years, some epidemiological studies have shown a rise in cases among younger women, both in Italy and across Europe.
An important and positive fact is that the 5-year survival rate after diagnosis is now 88%, thanks to advances in prevention, early detection, and treatments.

Screening Is Essential
In its early stages, breast cancer can be asymptomatic, meaning it may not show any noticeable signs. That’s why breast screening programs and regular check-ups are essential tools for detecting potential lesions when they are still small and more easily treatable.
Possible Symptoms of Breast Cancer
Some signs that may require medical evaluation include:
- A painless lump in the breast (the most common symptom).
- Lump or swelling in the underarm lymph nodes.
- Nipple changes (retraction, shape changes, or discharge).
- Spontaneous nipple discharge.
- Swelling, thickening, or redness of the breast.
The presence of one or more of these symptoms does not necessarily mean cancer, but it is always advisable to consult a specialist for an accurate assessment.
