MRI Cholangiopancreatography: How it Takes Place
In the event that it is to be performed with contrast medium, a creatinine test is required to evaluate renal function.
Before starting, the patient is given pineapple juice to eliminate gastric fluids present in the stomach and duodenum, which could alter the evaluation of the biliary system. The patient is then made to lie in a supine position on the resonance table with a transceiver coil on the abdomen. The duration of the exam is about 20-30 minutes.
MRI Cholangiopancreatography: When to Perform it
MRI cholangiopancreatography is required in the following cases:
- Stones, cholecystitis, gallbladder tumors.
- Search for causes of obstruction (jaundice), such as tumors or stones of the intrahepatic biliary tract or the main biliary tract (choledochus); biliary tract anomalies.
- Pancreatic tumors, acute or chronic pancreatitis, congenital anomalies (pancreas divisum, annular pancreas).
- Cystic or solid lesions of the pancreas, in association with MRI abdomen with contrast medium.
