About UPMC Hillman Cancer Center San Pietro FBF
UPMC Hillman Cancer Center San Pietro FBF offers people diagnosed with cancer highly innovative radiotherapy treatments, including stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), to treat primary tumors, secondary (metastatic) tumors, and recurrences in all parts of the body.
In cases of tumors that are difficult to reach or in patients who are not eligible for surgery, radiotherapy represents a valid alternative to invasive procedures, combining therapeutic effectiveness with lower morbidity.
A Story of Innovation and Clinical Excellence
The Center was established in 2013 through the collaboration between UPMC (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center) and San Pietro Fatebenefratelli Hospital, with a clear mission: to continuously invest in cutting-edge technologies and advanced treatment protocols. This commitment has led to a series of implementations that have kept it among the most innovative centers in Italy—from stereotactic radiosurgery systems to real-time monitoring, up to the current Elekta Unity system.
- 2013: introduced one of the first stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) technologies in Central Italy, becoming a regional point of reference for precision radiosurgery.
- 2018: first in Italy to implement the Brainlab ExacTrac Dynamic system for real-time monitoring during radiotherapy treatments.
- 2026: implemented the Elekta Unity linear accelerator, available in only around 50 locations worldwide, marking a significant advancement in the Center’s treatment capabilities. By integrating MRI and artificial intelligence, the system enables real-time monitoring of patient movement and tumor changes during treatment sessions.
Quality and Safety
Since 2017, UPMC Hillman Cancer Center San Pietro FBF has been accredited by the Joint Commission International (JCI), certifying compliance with international standards of excellence.
In 2002, 2023, and 2024, UPMC Hillman Cancer Center San Pietro FBF received the Guardian of Excellence Award (Press Ganey).
The Center also holds dual ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certifications, demonstrating its commitment to environmental sustainability and workplace health and safety.
