What You Should Know About Breast Cancer

Breast cancer begins in the breast tissue that is made up of glands for milk production, called lobules, and the ducts that connect the lobules to the nipple. Breast cancer is the 2nd deadliest cancer among women. 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.

To date, over 800,000 women were diagnosed in Italy. This number has gradually increased over the years and is projected to continue to increase by about 0.2% each year until 2040. In 80% of cases, the disease strikes after the age of 50, but the incidence in those in their 30s and 40s is increasing: more than 3,000 patients face a diagnosis before the age of 40 each year. Survival at 5 years after diagnosis is estimated to be around 88%.
