Professor Enrico Cortesi is a medical doctor and surgeon specialized in Occupational Medicine (Sapienza University of Rome, 1980) and Oncology (Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, 1983), with a career spanning more than four decades dedicated to excellence in oncological research and the highest standards of academic clinical practice.
After earning his degree in Medicine and Surgery from Sapienza University of Rome, he chose from the early stages of his career to focus on basic and clinical research. From 1979 to 1982, he conducted research in experimental carcinogenesis at the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, where he developed a strong foundation in the field. He subsequently expanded his expertise in clinical oncology from 1986 to 1988 at the Solid Tumor Service of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, one of the world’s leading oncology centers.
At Policlinico Umberto I in Rome, he built an extraordinary clinical career, holding the role of Director of the Complex Operations Unit of Oncology from 1995 to 2023. In parallel, he pursued a distinguished academic career at Sapienza University, obtaining the National Scientific Qualification as Full Professor in 2017 and being appointed Full Professor of Medical Oncology in 2020 within the Department of Radiological, Oncological and Pathological Sciences of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. From 2004 to 2023, he coordinated the Integrated Course in Medicine and Surgery (Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology and Surgical Oncology), and from 2019 to 2022 he served as Director of Sapienza University’s School of Specialization in Oncology.
Professor Cortesi has been an active member of the scientific community, serving as a speaker and moderator at national and international conferences. He has acted as Principal Investigator in clinical trials involving pharmaceutical products and medical devices and has held positions on ethics committees at both academic and hospital institutions.
