Dr. Gianfranco Fanello is a medical doctor and surgeon, specialized in General Surgery, with specific expertise in operative digestive endoscopy.
After graduating summa cum laude in Medicine and Surgery and completing his residency in General Surgery – with a focus on Emergency Surgery – at Sapienza University of Rome, he obtained a Level II Master’s degree in Operative Digestive Endoscopy from the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Rome. He also holds a PhD in Advanced Technologies in Surgery from Sapienza University of Rome.
Dr. Fanello has developed extensive experience in both elective and emergency procedures involving the upper and lower gastrointestinal tracts and the biliary system. His clinical practice focuses in particular on colorectal cancer screening as well as advanced diagnostic and interventional procedures.
Throughout his career, he has performed over 16,000 endoscopic examinations, more than half of which were interventional. These include esophageal and intestinal dilations, resection of neoplastic lesions, and placement of gastrointestinal stents. He has also carried out approximately 2,000 ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography) procedures involving complex therapeutic interventions such as sphincterotomies, stone removal, biliary duct dilations, placement of biliary and pancreatic stents, management of strictures, and treatment of post-liver transplant complications.
Since 2021, he has served as staff physician in the Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy Unit at San Giovanni-Addolorata Hospital in Rome.
Dr. Fanello is the author of numerous scientific publications and acts as a peer reviewer for the European Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology and for Gastroenterology Research and Practice.
A frequent speaker at national and international conferences on general surgery and digestive endoscopy, he is also an active member of the scientific societies SIED (Italian Society of Digestive Endoscopy) and SPIGC (Italian Polyspecialist Society of Young Surgeons).
