specialist-professional-biography-headingDr. Valerio Giannelli is a gastroenterologist and surgeon specialized in the diagnosis, treatment, and advanced management of liver diseases.
After earning his degree in Medicine and Surgery and his specialization in Gastroenterology, both with honors, at the University of Rome La Sapienza, he obtained the European Diploma in Transplant Hepatology (AISF/ELITA). He further expanded his international experience as a researcher and resident physician at the Hepatology and Liver Transplant Unit of Hôpital Beaujon in Paris, conducting clinical research and patient care in the field of advanced liver cirrhosis and liver transplantation, while specializing in hepatic hemodynamics at the INSERM center.
Dr. Giannelli delivers highly specialized care for liver diseases, ranging from common conditions such as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) to more complex conditions, including cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, portal hypertension, and liver transplantation.
As part of his clinical practice, he offers specialized hepatology consultations and post-transplant follow-up care. His research on liver transplantation earned him the prestigious European "Sheila Sherlock" Award from the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) in both 2015 and 2016.
Thanks to his expertise in interventional hepatology, he performs advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including percutaneous and transjugular liver biopsies, right heart catheterization, and invasive portal pressure measurement.
Since 2016, he has been a permanent staff physician at the Liver Diseases Unit of San Camillo Forlanini Hospital in Rome, within the Department of Internal Medicine.
He also collaborates with leading national and international reference centers and actively participates in research and innovation in hepatology, with the aim of ensuring that patients receive the best possible diagnostic and therapeutic care based on the most up-to-date scientific evidence.
He is a member of the Permanent Liver Transplantation Commission of AISF and serves as a faculty member and speaker at major hepatology and gastroenterology congresses (AISF, AIGO, ELITA, SITO, ILTS, EASL).
