Professor Marco Lanzetta Bertani

Professor Marco Lanzetta is a medical surgeon specialising in orthopaedics and traumatology, with a particular focus on hand surgery. In 1998, Professor Lanzetta performed the first hand transplant in the world, followed two years later by the first hand transplant in Italy, and in 2000 he performed the first bilateral hand transplant.

Professor Lanzetta is an expert in the treatment of diseases of the hand and wrist, including degenerative disorders, arthritis, congenital malformations, post-traumatic deformities and peripheral paralysis. He also specialises in plastic reconstruction of upper extremity tissues, including pedicled and free flaps, as well as tendon and nerve reconstructions and wrist arthroscopy. He applies and deepens innovative methods for the treatment of arthritis and various immunological disorders of the skeleton.

His international training took place in various prestigious facilities in France, Canada and Australia. Between 1996 and 2006, he headed the Microsearch Foundation in Sydney.

Recognised as an internationally renowned microsurgeon, he has been invited as Visiting Guest Professor of hand surgery in numerous countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Romania, Greece, Turkey, Thailand, Japan, Venezuela and Finland.

He is founder and international scientific coordinator of C148 Poliambulatori, the Italian Institute of Hand Surgery and the National Centre for Arthrosis. In addition, he is Senior Consultant at the General Hospitals of Bellinzona and Locarno, Professor of Hand Surgery at Ludes University of Lugano and Adjunct Professor of Hand Surgery and Microsurgery at the University of Canberra, Australia.

Professor Lanzetta is President of the International Registry of Hand Allografts and Composite Tissues. He has received numerous international awards and was awarded the Cavalierato della Repubblica Italiana in 2002.

He is President of the international humanitarian organisation Gicam, which deals with hand and reconstructive surgery in Africa and the Indian subcontinent. Author of more than 200 books, chapters and scientific articles, Professor Lanzetta continues to make significant contributions to the field of hand surgery.
