specialist-professional-biography-headingDr. Alessandro Mattina is Chief of the Diabetes Service at IRCCS ISMETT-UPMC. He is a specialist in Internal Medicine since 2016, with clinical and research expertise in metabolism, diabetes, and lipid disorders.
In 2014–2015, he served as a Clinical Research Fellow at the Department of Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Cardiovascular Prevention at Hôpital Pitié-Salpêtrière in Paris, while also attending advanced academic courses in vascular and metabolic medicine at Sorbonne Université.
In 2021, he earned a PhD in Cardiovascular, Metabolic, and Degenerative Diseases from the University of Palermo. His research focused on genetic dyslipidemias, insulin resistance, clinical nutrition, and obesity. His training has been further enriched by advanced clinical programs and observerships at leading international centers in the fields of transplantation, advanced therapies, and regenerative medicine for diabetes, including the Diabetes Research Institute at the University of Miami.
Since 2018, Dr. Mattina has been working at ISMETT as a diabetologist and clinical lead of the pancreas and kidney-pancreas transplant program. His main areas of clinical focus include post-transplant diabetes, type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and the multidisciplinary management of patients undergoing evaluation, work-up, and follow-up for pancreas or islet transplantation.
In 2024, he was appointed Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He serves as Principal Investigator in both single-center and multicenter research projects, with a focus on metabolic diseases, diabetes, and metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease. He is actively engaged in national and international scientific networks and collaborates as author, peer reviewer, and editorial board member for several peer-reviewed journals.
