Professor Geltrude Mingrone is a physician and surgeon specializing in Gastroenterology, Diabetology, and Metabolic Diseases, with a career spanning more than four decades dedicated to excellence in clinical research and medical practice in the fields of metabolic disorders and fatty liver disease.
She graduated magna cum laude in Medicine and Surgery from the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Rome in 1978. She subsequently focused her professional career on metabolic clinical research and medicine, earning a PhD in Clinical Pharmacology from Ghent University (Belgium) in 1994. Over the years, she has developed extensive expertise in bariatric and metabolic surgery, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH/NASH), and insulin resistance in the context of type 2 diabetes and obesity.
For many years, Professor Mingrone served as Director of the Division of Obesity and Related Diseases at the Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli IRCCS in Rome, a leading national referral center for metabolic medicine. She currently holds the position of Professor of Diabetology at King’s College London (UK) and serves as Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, where she has advanced an innovative approach to obesity and its associated metabolic complications.
Professor Mingrone is the author of more than 400 scientific publications, including randomized clinical trials published in leading medical journals such as The New England Journal of Medicine and The Lancet. She was also the Principal Investigator of the landmark BRAVES study (The Lancet, 2023), which investigated the role of metabolic surgery in metabolic steatohepatitis. She has been recognized among the top 2% most cited scientists worldwide (2024-2025, Scopus).
