Prof. Francesco Musumeci is Senior Consultant in Cardiac Surgery at ISMETT-UPMC and an internationally recognized leader in cardiac surgery, with expertise ranging from minimally invasive valve repair to heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory support.
He graduated in Medicine and Surgery in Palermo, and specialized in General Surgery and Cardiac Surgery at the University of Catania. He trained at some of the world’s leading centers, working alongside pioneers such as Sir Magdi Yacoub, Donald Ross, and Jaroslav Stark in London, and further refining his skills in the UK and Australia.
From 1998 to 2023 he served as Director of Cardiac Surgery and of the Department of Cardio-Thoracic and Vascular Medicine at San Camillo Hospital in Rome, one of Italy’s foremost cardiac centers, where he established advanced programs in heart transplantation, mechanical circulatory support, minimally invasive and robotic cardiac surgery. Among his milestones are the first Italian implantations of the HeartMate II (2002), HeartMate III (2015), and the Aeson Carmat Total Artificial Heart (2023).
He is a former President of the Italian Society of Cardiac Surgery (SICCH) and currently serves as President of the Cuore Domani Foundation. A member of several leading international scientific societies, he is the author of numerous publications and co-editor of the international volume Mechanical Circulatory Support in End-Stage Heart Failure: A Practical Guide.
Widely regarded as one of the foremost experts in mitral valve repair, minimally invasive valve surgery, and transcatheter procedures, Prof. Musumeci has played a pivotal role in shaping modern cardiac surgery in Italy and Europe.
