Dr. Duilio Pagano is a medical doctor and specialist in General Surgery, currently serving as Surgical Lead of the Kidney Transplant Program at IRCCS ISMETT-UPMC.
Since 2009 he has been part of the Department of Abdominal Surgery and Transplantation, developing extensive expertise in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, abdominal organ transplantation (liver, kidney, pancreas), and advanced minimally invasive surgery in complex patients, including transplant recipients and candidates.
He graduated cum laude in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Messina, completed his Residency in General Surgery with highest honors at the University of Padua, and earned a PhD in Clinical and Biomolecular Hepato-Gastroenterology at the University of Messina.
Over the course of his surgical career at ISMETT-UPMC, he has taken part—either as first, second, or assistant surgeon—in more than 2,400 surgical procedures, with a primary focus on hepatobiliary-pancreatic surgery and liver, kidney, and pancreas transplantation from deceased and living donors.
He is an active member of leading national and international scientific societies, including: European Society of Organ Transplantation (ESOT); International Liver Transplant Society (ILTS); Italian Society for Organ Transplantation (SITO); AICEP – Italian Association of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery; AISF – Italian Association for the Study of the Liver.
Since 2022, he has been a member of the Permanent Transplant Committee 2025, contributing to national strategic directives in the field. He also collaborates with the Italian Liver Transplant Coordination Center (CCTF) of the National Transplant Center, contributing to data analysis and the revision of organ allocation and eligibility criteria.
He is a member of the SITO–AICEP–CCTF College, and contributed to the national Survey on the management of hepatobiliary tumors in Italian transplant centers, published in Updates in Surgery (2024).
Dr. Pagano received the Young Investigator Award at the Joint International Congress of ILTS, ELITA & LICAGE (2018).
He actively participates in national and international research groups on best practices in surgery and transplantation and serves on the Editorial Board of several peer-reviewed journals, including BMC Surgery, International Journal of Surgery, Frontiers in Surgery, and Life.
