Professor Gilberto Poggioli is a medical doctor and surgeon, specialized in General Surgery, with more than 40 years of clinical, surgical, and academic experience. His professional activity focuses primarily on abdominal and gastrointestinal surgery, oncologic surgery, the surgical management of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD), and proctologic surgery, employing both traditional and minimally invasive approaches.

He is considered one of the leading European experts in ulcerative colitis surgery and rectal cancer surgery.

Alongside his clinical practice, he has developed a solid and continuous scientific research activity, mainly dedicated to the study of IBD, significantly contributing to the advancement of knowledge in this field. He is the inventor of several surgical techniques for Crohn’s disease, including abdominal procedures (such as strictureplasty) and perianal interventions (particularly for fistulas, also treated with autologous stem cells).

He graduated with honors in Medicine and Surgery and subsequently obtained, also with honors, his specialization in General Surgery at the University of Bologna, further enhancing his training in internationally recognized referral centers.

He carried out his clinical, surgical, and academic career at the IRCCS Policlinico di Sant’Orsola – University of Bologna, where he gained extensive clinical and operative experience and held positions of high responsibility, including Director of the Complex Operative Unit of General Surgery and Director of the Medical Surgical Department of Digestive, Hepatic, and Endocrine Metabolic Diseases.

He is Full Professor of General Surgery at the University of Bologna.

He is the author of numerous scientific publications in indexed international journals, with more than 160 papers listed in Scopus and over 170 in PubMed. He is also a member of several national and international scientific and surgical societies, including the European Surgical Association, and is part of Pelvex, a global network dedicated to extensive pelvic resections for advanced pelvic malignancies.
