The U.S. Consul General in Naples Visits ISMETT
Consul Roberts-Pounds was welcomed by Dr. Giovanna Volo, Sicilian Regional Health Commissioner, and by the management of ISMETT and UPMC, the U.S. global health enterprise that launched ISMETT in Palermo 25 years ago with an international non-profit partnership with the Region of Sicily. At ISMETT, the Consul visited the inpatient units, PACU, pediatrics unit, and research laboratories.
“ISMETT is a tangible example of the excellent collaboration between Sicily and the United States in the scientific field,” stated Consul Roberts-Pounds. “Thanks to investments in technology and in top level professionals, today ISMETT is an international reference center for transplant and highly specialized care that has contributed to bring Sicily back to the center of international health care. I also expressed my appreciation for the UPMC and Region of Sicily joint project of opening a second ISMETT hospital a few kilometers from Palermo. We hope all the partners involved will help achieve the new project in the short term.”
“ISMETT is an extraordinary reality established more than 20 years ago,” said Giovanna Volo, Sicilian Regional Health Commissioner. “Its growth has allowed to extend patient care offer with a new center and an increase in the number of beds. The close collaboration between Sicilian doctors and U.S. physicians has enabled us to offer health care standards to patients in Sicily and in the Euro-Mediterranean basin. ISMETT is a model that can generate benefits for the entire health system and that can be replicated in other regions too.”
