The course, aimed at oncologists, urologists, radiotherapists and biologists, is valid for the issue of 4 ECM credits.

Prostate cancer: multidisciplinarity and synergies between specialists

Prostate cancer is a topic of extreme interest for modern clinical uro-oncology. It is, in fact, one of the most commonly diagnosed neoplasms, constituting about 20% of all newly diagnosed cancers. Most people with prostate disorders turn to urology clinics in the area, where there is often no possibility to perform second-level diagnostic tests and the connection with the reference centers, such as to allow the patient to continue his diagnostic therapeutic process. The multidisciplinary approach of this pathology is the key to therapeutic success. In fact, it guarantees patients the opportunity to take advantage of increasingly effective, tolerable and personalized therapeutic solutions, integrating technological advances in the surgical, oncological and radiotherapy fields.

Treatment options for treating prostate cancer include:

  • surgery (standard/robotics)
  • drug therapy (hormone therapy and/or chemotherapy)
  • radiation therapy

Choices and combinations are made and personalized in relation to the patient.

Objectives of the course

Therefore, the aim of this course is to expand the opportunities for meeting and discussion between specialists in the different disciplines who, inevitably, are faced with the same pathology and sometimes the same patient, with different approaches. It is therefore essential that specialists cooperate in order to optimize the treatment and subsequent follow-up of this pathology. With this aim, a closer collaboration has been created between the urologists who work in the provinces of Avellino and Benevento and the oncologists responsible for the Fatebenefratelli Sacro di Gesù hospital in Benevento, the Giuseppe Moscati Hospital in Avellino and the San Pio Hospital in Benevento.

In addition, the event will analyze the role of systemic therapies based on the use of anti-androgen drugs that have shown efficacy in the most advanced stages of the disease and the identification of the most suitable candidate for such treatments.
