Lymphedema Open House October 31, 2025

17 October 2025

Join the Open House at UPMC Salvator Mundi International Hospital dedicated to lymphedema treatment.

#PinkOctober is Breast Cancer Awareness Month: it’s important to remember that one of the lesser-discussed but unfortunately common consequences is post-surgical lymphedema.

It is estimated that in Italy alone, there are around 40,000 new cases of lymphedema each year, many of which are linked to lymph node removal following breast cancer.

Lymphedema is a chronic condition of the lymphatic system that causes a buildup of lymph fluid in tissues, leading to swelling, a feeling of heaviness, itching, and tingling in the limbs.

If left untreated, it can worsen and become highly debilitating.

If you recognize any of these symptoms, suspect lymphedema, or already have a diagnosis, don’t wait. By attending our Lymphedema Open House, you can receive free medical consult and personalized recommendations for a diagnostic and treatment plan, while learning about the most advanced technologies we use:

  • Friday, October 31 – from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm

Book your appointment by clicking here or calling +39 06 588 96 800.

Dr. Alessandro Piperno, orthopaedic and trauma surgeon specialized in microsurgical treatment of lymphedema, will be available for free specialist consultations.

How Is Lymphedema Treated?

Depending on the severity and individual characteristics, the specialist will recommend the most suitable treatment path. Options include:

  • Conservative treatment: targeted physical activity, skin care, weight management, and complex decongestive therapy.
  • Microsurgical intervention: one of the most promising techniques is lymphaticovenous anastomosis (LVA), or lymphatic bypass, which creates new drainage pathways to reduce swelling and complications.

The Added Value: the Symani Robot

UPMC Salvator Mundi International Hospital is one of the few centers in Europe using the state-of-the-art Symani Robot for microvascular and lymphatic surgery.

Symani is the world’s first robotic platform dedicated to microsurgery and supermicrosurgery.

The Symani robot uses NanoWrist instruments – the smallest in the world – and features tremor filtering and motion scaling technology, allowing for micron-level ugrica precision.

Benefits include:

  • Enhanced precision when suturing extremely small blood and lymphatic vessels.
  • Potential reduction in operative time.
  • Minimized tissue trauma.
  • Improved overall clinical outcomes.
