ISMETT-UPMC: LDT, 77-Year-Old Mother Donates Kidney to Her Daughter
A successful living donor kidney transplant was recently performed at IRCCS ISMETT-UPMC in Palermo, in which a 77-year-old mother donated a kidney to her daughter, who was suffering from chronic kidney failure. This is an exceptional case, as the donor is among the oldest in Italy to have made a living donation.
“When I found out I could donate my kidney to my daughter,” said Teresa, the donor, “I had no doubts. I was able to undergo the procedure because my body is in good health, and I would do it again. Through this gesture, I was able to ease my daughter’s suffering.”
This procedure highlights the importance of living donation as an effective therapeutic option—even at an advanced age—thanks to careful donor selection and the use of cutting-edge surgical techniques.
