The Importance of Cardiovascular Prevention

Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death worldwide. In Italy, they accounted for almost 31% of all deaths in 2022 (source: Italian National Institute of Statistics – ISTAT), and they are also the main cause of morbidity and disability.

An encouraging finding is that, with appropriate preventive measures, up to 80% of deaths could be avoided (source: Global Burden of Cardiovascular Diseases).

Cardiovascular diseases are largely preventable: in addition to non‑modifiable risk factors—such as age, sex, and genetic predisposition—modifiable determinants related to behavior and lifestyle significantly influence overall cardiovascular risk.

Data from the 2023–2024 period published by PASSI (Progressi delle Aziende Sanitarie per la Salute in Italia), the surveillance system of the Italian National Institute of Health (Istituto Superiore di Sanità – ISS), show that the main cardiovascular risk factors are highly prevalent in the adult population.

For example, 41% of Italians present at least three conditions among hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, smoking, physical inactivity, obesity, or diabetes; moreover, 49% of men and 39% of women have elevated blood pressure values or are undergoing treatment.

These findings underscore the importance of monitoring one’s health and adopting personalized prevention strategies.

How Can the Risk of Cardiovascular Disease Be Reduced?

The first step is to adopt a healthy lifestyle, based on a balanced diet, regular physical activity, smoking cessation, and moderation in alcohol consumption.

It is also essential to take care of your health before the onset of symptoms by undergoing periodic medical check‑ups to monitor parameters such as blood pressure, heart rate and rhythm, blood glucose, cholesterol, and triglycerides.

These assessments become all the more important after the age of 40.

Don’t wait until you feel unwell: take care of your heart every day.
