ISMETT opens its sixth operating room: greater surgical capacity and fewer patients traveling out of region for care
7 October 2026
The sixth operating room has been inaugurated at ISMETT in Palermo: a modular ISO 5 facility built with an investment of over €900,000, co-funded by ISMETT and the Bank of Italy. The room has completed technical testing and clinical validation, and has received health authorization and institutional accreditation from the Sicilian Region. It is designed to integrate with advanced surgical technologies and artificial intelligence systems.
At a center where emergency transplant activity often requires several operating rooms to be used at the same time, the new capacity reduces the rescheduling of elective procedures and makes it possible to absorb a larger surgical volume, with the aim of shortening waiting lists and reducing the number of patients who must travel outside the region for treatment. The ceremony was attended by Marcello Caruso, Sicilian Regional Minister for Health, representatives of the Bank of Italy, and ISMETT's management. ISMETT Director Angelo Luca stressed that the investment is aimed at ensuring continuity, timeliness and quality of care, and thanked the Bank of Italy and the Sicilian Region for supporting the project.
