Holidays are a time to relax and a chance to go to the beach, the mountains, or visit cities of art and new cultures. If you are a fitness enthusiast, with a little planning and bringing the right equipment, you can maintain your workout routine anywhere!

Here are some tips on how to stay active when you are out of town.

Running Barefoot on the Beach

One of the best exercises for your feet and ankles, the sand reduces the impact on your knees and its constant resistance can help you burn more calories.

Swimming

One hour of swimming burns up to 550 calories.

Surf

Great workout, works the arms, legs and core, also helps train balance.

Volleyball, Frisbee, Racquetball and Sandcastle Building

These are all activities for the whole family. You can also use sand buckets as dumbbells, adjusting the weight (water, wet sand, dry sand) for different workouts.

Collecting Shells

To make this activity more challenging, do a squat or lunge every time you pick up a shell.

Walking to Get Around

Exploring your holiday destination on foot helps keep you active.

Many cities offer thematic walking tours that combine art, entertainment and sport.

Cycling

Many locations have bicycle lanes to make cycling safer, especially in seaside resorts.

Exploring the Local Cultural Scene

Every place has its own traditions, including dance. Try flamenco in Spain, the jig in Dublin or square dancing in South America!

Exercise While Travelling

If you are a jogging fan and don't want to give up your workout on holiday, check before you leave if there are suitable running routes near you.

Pack everything you need for training, such as a yoga mat or resistance band, as well as suitable clothing and shoes.  If you have all the necessary equipment in your suitcase, it will be harder to be lazy!

Plan an active stop: if you spend many hours in the car, plan a stop near a park or other scenic area and take the opportunity to stretch your legs and go for a walk or jog.
