Pediatric Flat Foot Day - December 13, 2025

25 November 2025

In December, UPMC Salvator Mundi International Hospital is dedicating a specialist day to pediatric flat foot, with the goal of providing families with an accurate evaluation and clinical guidance.
Flat foot in children is very common in early childhood and often represents a physiological stage of development. In some cases, however, flatfoot may persist and be associated with issues such as pain, fatigue, postural alterations, or difficulty walking. In these situations, a specialist visit allows for a precise assessment and helps identify the most appropriate course of action.

If you suspect that your son or daughter may have this condition, or if you would like a second opinion after an initial diagnosis, you can book a dedicated evaluation during our Pediatric Flat Foot Day:

  • Saturday, December 13 – from 9:00 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Dr. Alfredo Orefice, orthopaedic surgeon specialized in foot and ankle disorders, including in children, will be available for a comprehensive flat foot assessment that includes:

  • Specialist orthopaedic consult.
  • Gait and plantar support analysis performed by an orthopaedic technician using a baropodometric platform.

The baropodometric platform is a diagnostic tool that detects the distribution of foot loads while standing and walking. Through pressure sensors, it allows for the analysis of how the child places the foot, how weight is distributed, and whether there are alterations that may affect posture or gait. This evaluation, combined with the orthopaedic consultation, helps accurately determine the presence and degree of flatfoot.

At the end of the visit, Dr. Orefice will be able to provide an initial diagnosis or offer a second opinion on an existing one, recommending the most suitable therapeutic pathway.

Don’t let flatfoot impact on your child’s well-being and health: book your appointment online by clicking here or by calling +39 06 588 96 800.

If diagnostic tests related to flat foot or other orthopaedic issues have already been performed, please bring them with you.

Pediatric Flat Foot: What You Need to Know

Flat foot is a common condition in early childhood, due to the natural immaturity of the plantar arch. It usually corrects itself spontaneously by the age of 6–7. When it persists and causes pain, fatigue, or difficulty walking, a dedicated therapeutic approach may be necessary. In cases where surgery is required, modern minimally invasive techniques now allow for a faster and less traumatic recovery.

In most cases, flat foot does not cause symptoms, but when they appear, the most common include:

  • Balance difficulties.
  • Discomfort or difficulty wearing shoes.
  • Inflammation, pain, or swelling of the ankle, heel, or arch.
  • Leg and back pain.

Carefully observing the child’s gait and physical activity is essential. If one or more of these signs persist, it is recommended to consult a pediatric orthopaedic specialist for an in-depth evaluation.
