Neurological Diagnostic Services at UPMC

Our specialists investigate the nervous system using a number of examinations and diagnostic procedures, which include:

  • Electroencephalogram (EEG): This is a particularly important examination in cases of epilepsy, brain tumors, and vascular disorders of brain tissue. The graph records brain activity through the electroencephalograph, an instrument connected to small electrodes placed on the head. The EEG recordings can also monitor the patient during periods of sleep.
  • Electromyographic examination or Electromyography (EMG): This investigation enables the study of the peripheral nervous system (neuropathies), neuromuscular transmission (myasthenic syndromes) and muscles (myopathies). It is performed by inserting small needle electrodes into the muscles and provides the neurosurgeon or orthopedic surgeon with relevant elements to assess the need and urgency for surgery. In most cases, this test must be used together with Electroneurography (ENG) to arrive at a precise diagnosis.
  • Electroneurographic examination or Surface Electroneurography (ENG): This examination assesses the functional integrity of peripheral nerves, applying small electric shocks and recording the response with small surface electrodes. ENG measures the conduction rate of sensitive nerve fibers (which from the limbs carry sensitivity to the spinal cord and brain) and motor nerve fibers (which from the spinal roots lead motor command to the muscles). It allows our specialists to identify conditions affecting the axon (prolongation of the nerve cell that carries the signal) from those affecting the myelin (axon lining). The information obtained through this investigation is fundamental in all forms of peripheral polyneuropathy, diabetes mellitus, and carpal tunnel syndrome. In most cases, this test must be used together with Electromyography (EMG) to arrive at a clear diagnosis.
