How It Works
A photosensitizing agent is applied to the affected skin lesion. After an incubation period, the area is exposed to a specific wavelength of light. The light activates the photosensitizer, triggering oxidative reactions within damaged cells that either repair or destroy them. This controlled and localized process minimizes damage to the surrounding healthy tissue.
Therapeutic Indications
Photodynamic Therapy may be used for:
- Superficial Skin Cancers – Early-stage squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma.
- Actinic Keratoses – Precancerous lesions caused by chronic sun exposure.
- Porokeratosis – A rare skin disorder with potential for malignant transformation.
- Photoaging – Skin rejuvenation and improvement of skin texture and appearance caused by sun-induced aging.
- Scleroderma – In selected localized subtypes of the disease.
