Infectious and Tropical Diseases at UPMC Salvator Mundi International Hospital

The Infectious Diseases Service at UPMC Salvator Mundi International Hospital provides a multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites.

Thanks to close integration with our Laboratory and advanced Diagnostic Imaging services, we ensure fast and effective clinical pathways for the management of acute, chronic, and complex infections.

What Are Infectious Diseases?

Infectious diseases are clinical conditions caused by the invasion of microorganisms such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites. While some microorganisms coexist harmlessly with the human body (such as the intestinal microbiota), others are considered pathogenic and can cause infections that may present acutely, become chronic, or remain asymptomatic for long periods.

Given the heterogeneous nature of symptoms—ranging from fever and persistent fatigue to gastrointestinal or urinary disorders and skin rashes—promptly identifying the source of an infection can be challenging without specialist expertise. Modes of transmission vary widely (airborne, sexual, foodborne, or direct contact) and infections may affect any organ or system of the human body.

Conditions Treated

  • Fever of Unknown Origin: Advanced diagnostic assessment for persistent, unexplained symptoms.
  • Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Comprehensive screening, diagnosis, and treatment of infections including HIV, Syphilis (Treponema pallidum), Gonorrhea, HPV, and Chlamydia. We also provide dedicated consultations for PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) for HIV prevention in high-risk individuals.
  • Recurrent and Complex Infections: Management of recurrent urinary tract infections (cystitis), osteoarticular infections, soft tissue infections, and conditions related to antibiotic resistance.
  • Viral Hepatitis: Diagnosis and monitoring of Hepatitis B and C.
